Welcome back to a brand new school year! I am so glad to be back. My name is Joelle Jones. I teach at Columbia Elementary on Mondays and Tuesdays and at Heritage Elementary on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. I have taught Elementary Spanish for Madison City schools since the beginning of the program in January of 2014.
My husband and I moved to Madison six years ago with our four sons. My husband works for SAIC and we followed a job here. We love living here.
The first three weeks have gone really well. I am really impressed with what the first and second graders remembered from last year. We have been reviewing quite a bit because we have several new students in every class. It can be a bit overwhelming for new students but I tell them that we go over the same words every week and that they will soon catch on to what we are saying in class.
In Kindergarten we have learned how to greet someone, to tell someone their name, the class rules in Spanish, and a few verbs (see the "What's Happening" page for a more detailed list). We have practiced with puppets, paper plate masks, games, and songs. I cannot believe how fast the Kindergarteners learn the words. It's amazing!!!!
In first and second grade we've reviewed our greetings, classroom rules, and our verbs (see the "What's Happening" page for more details). I have been really impressed with 1st and 2nd graders' ability to produce the words in Spanish. They have been doing an excellent job! It's been very rewarding.
When we come back from Labor day we will color one of our portfolio pages. They will bring their portfolios home at the end of the year. They really enjoy bringing them home to show off the work they've done in Spanish class.
In September we will be working on practicing and learning numbers. Kindergarten will practice 1-10, 1st grade will practice 1-20, and 2nd grade will practice 1-50.
I have had a great start to the year and I am looking forward to a great school year! If there's any questions or concerns please feel free to email me.
Gracias,
Joelle Jones
